DIRT Adopts New Egypt SS Sprint Division
|
New Egypt, NJ (February 28, 2005) -- New Egypt Speedway
management and DIRT MotorSports have reached an agreement that
will see New Egypt's fledgling SS Sprint division flying the
DIRT sanctioning banner for the 2005 season.
First introduced to New Jersey fans in 2003, New Egypt's SS
Sprint division is based on the winged Super Sportsman cars that
race with so much success at Pennsylvania's Silver Spring
Speedway. Unlike
traditional Sprints, the cars are self-starting -- a huge plus
in terms of entertainment value and fan appeal.
"I love these cars -- especially the fact that they're
self-starting," said DIRT MotorSports Chief Operating
Officer Bobby Hartslief. "This is a concept that we've been
trying to promote in the 410 Sprint class. We're excited to add
New Egypt's Sprint division to the DIRT fold."
Polled prior to the track's decision to sanction the class, the
SS Sprint drivers were overwhelmingly in favor of the move.
"I think it's a great benefit to the class. There's no bad
side to it," said Mike David, New Egypt's 2003 SS Sprint
champion and one of the first supporters of the division.
"The DIRT sanction will give us some name recognition in
the bigger scheme of things, and may be very beneficial in
expanding the class outside New Egypt in the future."
The SS Sprints are scheduled to run 18 shows at New Egypt this
year. As part of the DIRT agreement, the track will host a total
of three Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series special events for
the headlining Modified class. The SS Sprints will be showcased
as an undercard for those three major races, on Wednesday, June
22, Wednesday, August 24, and during the season-end Legends of
the Fall
weekend on September 23-24.
As a DIRT sanctioned division, SS Sprint drivers will purchase a
DIRT license rather than a New Egypt pit license, and will be
required to run Hoosier spec tires on the rear of the car; any
Hoosier tires are
acceptable for the front of the car. As New Egypt promoter Jim
Swanson pointed out, "The tires selected will also conform
to the rules of Susquehanna and Silver Spring speedways, the two
other tracks that run these cars regularly. We're all on the
same page, which is good for the racers."
SS Sprint teams will be allotted a grace period of three weeks,
to use up their existing inventory of tires.
